A More Resilient Workforce: The Role of Restoration Vacations

One way to think about how to provide value to your workforce that is considered a competitive advantage is to structure their work and PTO in ways that contribute to their well-being and productivity.

Creating a culture that intentionally uses vacation as a key lever in its talent development and retention strategy can yield significant benefits – higher job and organizational satisfaction, lower turnover, and better employee health (and the cost savings that go with better health). Like many new practices, this process is more effective and proceeds more rapidly with professional help.

For organizations that want to foster a resilient workforce, support for executing successful vacation time use is as important as support for on-the-job resilience efforts and work-life balance goals.  Supporting employee vacations begins with middle managers and C-Suite executives - the two groups least likely to take their full allotment of vacation days and the role models for everyone else. They need to take reliably restorative vacations, both to model appropriate behavior but also to restore their personal resources so they remain effective, resilient leaders.

Organizationally supported vacation planning can also alleviate concerns about becoming expendable and fear of missing out while helping individuals and teams better manage real and perceived resource constraints.  Through a pre-vacation planning process, participants are offered a non-emergency opportunity to develop managerial skills in planning, delegation, project management and communication.  When managers and executives take vacations, staff and other stakeholders often find they have a greater opportunity to grow, learn and demonstrate their potential for taking on greater responsibility.  Post-vacation planning and debriefing provide the opportunity for valuable developmental feedback for all stakeholders.

About the Presenter

Edy Greenblatt is a motivational speaker, executive coach & coach supervisor, entrepreneur, and scholar. Dr Edy runs her own professional services firm and has served as faculty at Desautels Centre for Integrative Thinking (University of Toronto Rotman Business School), the Center for Creative Leadership and, the Center for Effective Organizations (University of Southern California.) She’s also been a McKinsey & Co. management consultant, dance ethnologist, talk show host, and a circus peanut vendor., To ensure organizations can attract, maintain and retain resilient talent, she has recently co-founded Restoration Vacation, Inc.

Dr. Edy earned her Ph.D. in the joint program in Organizational Behavior at Harvard University and Harvard Business School. Prior to that, she completed the required curriculum for an MBA and earned a master’s degree in Psychology (both at Harvard), after earning a master’s degree in Dance Ethnology and a B.S. in World Arts and Cultures at University of California at Los Angeles. Dr Edy currently lives in Israel.  In her free time, she still dances, flies on the trapeze, swims and sleeps.
